Gay Consent.Lab is a workshop and sharing circle on consent, care, and pleasure, but also violence and loneliness in the gay* community. During the Lab, we discuss these issues in the context of sex, drugs, cruising, raves, and chills. We talk about consent and abuse either as victim, perpetrator or bystander or somewhere in the grey areas between them, and explore how consent tools allow us to achieve more pleasure from sex, dancing, intimacy, etc.

The workshop takes place bi-weekly or monthly in Berlin, responding to repeated cases of consent violations in queer nightlife and the call to co-create feminist safer spaces. Respecting traditions of non-verbal consent forms, the workshop asks how gay* people navigate boundaries and invites a pleasure-focused rethinking of the “yes means yes, no means no” paradigm. In 2024, the Gay Consent.Lab was awarded the Berlin Club Commission’s Tag der Clubkultur award for our community work.

Mati Klitgård recently finished their PhD in Gender Studies working on queer politics and care. In 2022, they founded the Gay Consent.Lab platform to target consent violations in Berlin's gay* and queer communities.

• The workshop's focus is on historically gay sexual practices (cruising, darkrooms, hook-up apps) but many genders use these practices
